Man hit wife and dog in quarrel, gets 6 weeks' jail
AN ANGRY husband punched the family pet and hit its right
hind paw with a wine bottle. When his wife tried to protect the dog, he
kicked both her and the animal.
What made it worse was that Leong Yew Foo, 36, hurt his
wife while he was barred from going near her by a Personal Protection
Order issued on July 11, 2000.
Yesterday, District Judge Tan Puay Boon sentenced him to six weeks in
jail for contravening the order and four weeks for being cruel to the
dog.
The sentences are concurrent. Leong was allowed to defer
sentence until Nov 27 to complete unfinished work.
The incidents with the dog and his wife, Madam Heng Lee
Mui, 33, happened on June 28, when the sales manager was having an argument
with her at their condominium at Woodlands Crescent in the evening.
She called the police the next day.
She had bruises on her right hand, while the 10-month-old
white dog's right hind paw was fractured and its eyes bruised.
In mitigation, his lawyer, Mr Bruce Wong, assisted by
Mr Yeo Seng Hong, said Leong's work took a toll on his marriage.
The couple quarrelled constantly over her suspicions
that he was having an extramarital affair.
On the occasions he was out late for meetings or to entertain
clients, she would SMS him 50 to 100 times to check on his movements,
he said.
As a result, Leong felt distressed, was under tremendous
pressure and felt a sense of injustice for being wrongfully accused. The
couple had reconciled and Madam Heng had forgiven him, he said.
Leong, he added, was remorseful and regretted his actions.
He had also volunteered his services at the Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals.
Under the Women's Charter, Leong could have been fined
up to $2,000 and jailed for up to six months.
The maximum penalty for cruelty to an animal is a $10,000
fine and a year in jail.
